Artist’s Statement on Beauty

1. I read to find out what happens next. I write to find out what just happened. I take photos to honor the beautiful moment that no one else notices.
2. A psychoanalyst friend thinks that beauty is proof of God’s love. His God is kinder than mine; for me, beauty is recompense for being human in the face of God’s love, which surpasses my little understanding.
3. Beauty shows the connection between inside and outside, the possibility of human wholeness in the indifferent world, the grace of getting a cosmic joke.

Karen Greenbaum-Maya, retired clinical psychologist, German major and occasional photographer, no longer lives for Art, but still thinks about it a lot. Her first full sentence was, “Look at the moon!” Besides her professional activities, she reviewed restaurants for the Claremont Courier for five years, sometimes in heroic couplets, sometimes imitating Hemingway. Her poems and photos appear frequently in journals and anthologies, and have received Special Merit and Honorable Mention in Comstock Review’s Muriel Craft Bailey Memorial poetry contest. Kattywompus Press publishes her two chapbooks, Burrowing Song (2013) and Eggs Satori (2014). Aldrich Press publishes her first book-length collection, The Book of Knots and their Untying (2016). She co-hosts Fourth Sundays, a poetry series in Claremont, California. More at: www.cloudslikemountains.blogspot.com/.
